Honouring the Legacy of Former IFOAM President Prof. Engelhard Boehncke

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Prof. Engelhard Boehncke, former President of IFOAM – Organics International, on 22 March 2024, just weeks before his 90th birthday.

Prof. Boehncke played a pivotal role in shaping the global organic movement. Elected to the World Board in 1984 during the 5th International IFOAM Scientific Conference (now known as the Organic World Congress), he immediately took on the role of Chair of the Board. After his re-election in 1986, his position transitioned to President, a title he held during a crucial period of growth and transformation for IFOAM and the broader organic movement.

Under his leadership, IFOAM expanded rapidly, embracing diverse perspectives within the organic sector. His open-mindedness, strategic vision, and ability to unite different schools of thought helped lay the foundation for IFOAM as a global federation. Reflecting on his contributions, former IFOAM Director Bernward Geier shared:

"He was, in the best sense of the word, a President who was not only leading but uniting the Federation at a crucial crossroad. His skills in integration were embedded in his wonderful sense of humour."

Prof. Boehncke’s passion for organic agriculture and animal welfare began early in his career. Following his studies in veterinary medicine, he became a professor at the University of Kassel/Witzenhausen in 1975, mentoring hundreds of students who would go on to shape the field. His knowledge and expertise extended far beyond academia—he was a sought-after speaker on animal husbandry issues worldwide.

His lasting impact was recognised in 2008 when he became the first recipient of the One World Award for Lifetime Achievement, honouring his contributions to organic agriculture and IFOAM’s development as a unifying global movement.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his enduring legacy. His work in promoting harmony between agriculture and animal welfare will continue to inspire generations.

May he rest in peace.
