SEKEM Honored with 2024 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity

SEKEM, a pioneer in organic agriculture, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity. This recognition, shared with Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming and scientist Rattan Lal, celebrates SEKEM's significant contributions to sustainable agriculture and climate resilience. For nearly 50 years, SEKEM has transformed arid land in Egypt into thriving agricultural hubs, supporting over 10,000 farmers and converting 40,000 acres to biodynamic farming.

Founded in 1977 by Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, SEKEM has been at the forefront of promoting organic and biodynamic farming methods in Egypt. Their holistic approach integrates agriculture, social development, and cultural initiatives, creating a sustainable ecosystem that benefits the environment and local communities. SEKEM's efforts have revitalized degraded land and improved countless families' livelihoods, fostering economic growth and social stability.

SEKEM's innovative practices include composting, crop rotation, and biological pest control, which enhance soil fertility and biodiversity. Their commitment to research and education has also been pivotal in spreading sustainable agricultural practices throughout the region. By establishing the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development, SEKEM has created a platform for future generations to engage in and advance organic farming techniques.

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, awarded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, recognizes SEKEM's outstanding achievements in promoting ecological balance and combating climate change. This award underscores the critical role that sustainable agriculture plays in ensuring food security and environmental health. SEKEM's dedication to fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and nature sets a powerful example for global efforts towards sustainability.

IFOAM - Organics International congratulates SEKEM for this well-deserved honor. Their relentless dedication and pioneering spirit in organic agriculture serve as an inspiration to us all. We are proud to count SEKEM among our closest members and look forward to continued collaboration in promoting a sustainable and equitable future for organic farming worldwide.
